The deviant criminal... was the investigator! This case is synecdoche for straight woman true crime fandom. If you ask the materially comfortable straight women of North America why they consume true crime to the degree that they do, they'll tell you that it's the price of being a woman: that danger lurks around every corner, and that women must maintain eternal vigilance. But of course this is a matter of memory, right? At present there are some nerd stats that indicate that women in North America have it pretty good. I don't blame anybody for keeping up a safety regimen beyond its point of usefulness. That just seems prudent. What's less than prudent is the way that straight women obsess over true crime as opposed to, say, auto accidents (or heart disease, or cirrhosis). Women are not listening with prurient interest to podcasts about auto accidents. I think that true crime is an elevated form of gossip. Like all good gossip, it needs to be about people who are similar to the target audience -- that's why true crime focuses on comfortable women, as opposed to massacres in the third world. True crime has to be mimetic because it is a form of gossip that has no compunctions about scapegoating people. This scapegoating mechanism is shared character of true crime, celeb gossip, and various snark discussions is scapegoating. Women want to participate in an indefinite social mass that collectively decides which identities are castigated. I could go on but I want you to discuss -- what's with straight women and the true crime thing? [footnote 1] I want all of the writers of Petrarchan to know that you should not be stacking up this many drugs to write the manuscript. The manuscript writing is actually the easiest, dreamiest part of the writing process. Save the drugs for when you have to do contracts, fight with editors, and so on.
