I really liked three men in a boat + the sequel and the diary of a nobody. portnoys complaint and confederacy of dunces in on my list.

>>8797 i dont like law school right now because im sick, im burnt out, midterms kicked my ass but the assignments keep piling up and finals wait for no one. that said, i dont think i would be faring any better were i studying something else (im not the one to risk doing "useless degrees" so you can imagine what my alternative options for higher ed may have been). though i think there are certain personalities that thrive in law school i would not say being a certain archetype is a requisite because there are non-neurotic borderline bohemian types in my class who have made it so far, some of them were in trenches during finals but they made it and they are the ones i wager had the best time in law school because they made efforts to maintain their social lives and ended up with great connections and consequently, with better potential job prospects compared to rest of us. i can assure you that you would be more than intellectually stimulated in law school. you should know though that law school and actually practicing the law are very different. ill make a pros and cons list for you. pros of law school: learning the law is actually fun (most of the time), if you find the right people or go to a decent law school theres a sense of community, being surrounded by smart people is amazing they have a great sense of humor, law is all encompassing so you get to learn about so many things you would not have otherwise, it widens your knowledge base by a great margin, prestigious lol. cons of law school - exam season will shorten your lifespan unless youre just built different, ik you mentioned you can afford it but its still a considerable dent in finances, if you go to a predatory law school youll struggle way more than people who didnt, if people in your law school just suck youre going to feel really fucking isolated and depressed, many of the cases that you'll read will make you feel disillusioned with the world and the system, cold calls (hazing) and so many more other things. pros of being a lawyer- money, maybe (?) youll help people, more fulfilling than excel sheet jobs, if you decide to pivot youre better off with a JD than something else, most jobs suck atleast you make money in law, theres something nice about being less daunted by the legal machinery because it has become familiar to you, if you find the right area to practice you will not be miserable. cons - biglaw is where the big money is (if you want big money right away) and big law is where people burn out, the antagonistic nature of the job will get to you and be detrimental to your relationships unless you figure out how to not let that happen, sickeningly common substance abuse, the stakes are super high, you will be astounded by how stupid many judges are, eyesight posture :(
How do you find law school, and what kind of person would you recommend it for if at all? I've been out of uni for five years and thinking of going back. I've always been academic and liked studying the humanities, although academia doesn't appeal to me and all the different jobs I've tried since leaving uni are very under stimulating. I'm in a financial position to do so but I'm still hesitant because all the lawyers I've ever met warn against it purely because of how soul crushing they find it and that it becomes hard to enjoy the things they used to do (like reading, as you said). Not totally sure I believe them because every workplace I've ever been in always seemed to have sucked the life out of my senior colleagues, so I'm not so sure law is very different in that respect, and the legal profession has a lot of different types of roles anyway so they can't all be the same. I'm generally intellectual / enjoy thinking a lot, and I like following rules and processes. I've done a lot of secretariat and governance work which I enjoy although, as I said, most of the time it is incredibly simple and under-stimulating. At this point I'm fed up with pretending I'm busy by stretch out an hour or two of actual work into a full work day. I'd rather be drained by hard work than drained by doing nothing.
