The Death of Yugoslavia : Anonymous : 152 days ago : No.825

This documentary created by the BBC in the immediate aftermath of the war in Bosnia is one of the most compelling works of factual television I've watched. It's positioned so close to the events concerned that it seems to almost occupy a middle ground between history and journalism. All the major figures are interviewed and speak with remarkable frankness about their motivations and actions. The general slant of the production is anti-Serbian, but is seems reasonably balanced. In particular the Croat nationalists do not come out looking great, and I found myself having more sympathy for Milosevic than I expected. This documentary really helped me understand why leftists and communists have traditionally been so strongly opposed to nationalism. It seems to me that there is no reason at all why the Yugoslavs - or at least, the Croats, Serbs, and Bosniaks, with their common language and history - should regard themselves as anything other than a common people with benign confessional differences. But for no reason greater than the arbitrary mirage of nationalism, they are all consumed by violence and hatred. It's desperately futile and ugly. Well worth a few hours of your time if you have any interest at all in modern conflict and the war in Yugoslavia. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdw7wnKe0wiUSNdugFGpnSfm6wt-9gvUt

>>976 Thanks, it was great. This series ends in 1995, I found a followup series on the same channel, made by the same people. I haven't watched until the end, but it should go to the end of the war. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1kLB_cPLCA&list=PLdw7wnKe0wiWksAMfbSbyNz3E9qUUEga_

I saw a documentary called the weight of chains, I don't remember much now but it was interesting at the time. It's also about conflicts in that region, but it's not coming from a mainstream western perspective
