I did the common tech-noided thing and left Facebook... looking back this wasn't the best decision, because I could've retained more contacts by *just not posting* for a few years. Now I want to return because having Gigacorp SocMeds cut out of my life has more downsides than upsides, particularly that it's much more difficult to reach some "normal" people. OTOH, leaving WhatsApp, Hacker News, and Discord have been pure wins so far... it's really Facebook, clearnet personal site, email, Reddit and a YouTube account that turned out indispensable. Not as an active participant necessarily, but "legit lurker" accounts yes. So this thread is about how to keep one's presence on such huge media sites tennable, thrifty, and secure. How not to shoot one's mouth off in politically correct spaces; how not to get culled from the herd; how to have one's opinions and chime in where necessary, but not without considering that the personal cost to such expressions is not always worth it. The closest to relevant reading I have at hand is The Book of the Courtier: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/67799 But it's a bit drastic to do a yearly re-read of all this just to have a Facebook account. (For example, going full-Nulltard and retreating halfway into the darkweb and getting debanked... not worth it even for 99,99% of privacy-savvy odd ones. OTOH, 100% pure lurking and posting only cat images is too far in the direction of self-censure / internalizing PC norms.) Cheers & have fun with the topic, I'll be reading along.
I cannot help myself on the internet so self-censure is absolutely necessary like a bad alcoholic can't even look at 0% beer or mocktails. Petrarchan is some of the first posting I've done online in years because of its free usage. Sorry this reply wasn't what you were looking for.
FREE AS IN FREEDOM btw

But what if I want to be?

Just don't be racist. It is that simple. People on chan sites always urge new users to "lurk more" but they fail to realize that this applies to every site. If you are ever in any danger of being banned or censored, you have failed to lurk enough. Your autism must be preventing you from understanding what is and isn't ethical to post.
I have never once needed to censor myself on any site. And if I did get banned, I have several back-up accounts.
Why are you assuming I'm one of you lmao fuck off back to Kiwifarms or some shit retard

The kind of person who is only contactable through social media like Facebook is living breathing fleshy time waste. It reflects badly on you that you regret being free of such shitstains.

Interesting that you feel that over-interaction is the biggest draw to social media. I find that lurking is what is the largest negativity to me. It sucks my time away because I enjoy new stimulus and procrastinating. Contributing would be a beneficial change (I figure I could post and put it down, versus lurking and scrolling and losing track of time). Maybe I'm too norman for this post though.
