There is, but a lot of them are outside of the English-speaking world. Not speaking English is an advantage in this matter: trend adoption is slower, so old school forums are still active places (at least in French).

Imageboards were the start of the decline. I remember when someone started a thread for memes (image macros) on the forum I used back in 2007 and it drove me nuts because the spam rendered the new posts notification on that board useless. Imageboards were like that times a billion to me then and I was right to feel that way. There is a fundamental difference between text and images. Only now in the Tiktok video slop era is the shoe on the other foot.

No, they're either slowly losing their literally aged population, or dead. I wish they would be revived, but obviously more instantly gratifying medias have won out. Imageboards are the last stronghold.

Saddens me how even some of the communities who have survived have migrated to Discourse, which is completely soulless and doesn't have signatures or anything like that.
It's no wonder, since it was made by the Stack Overflow guy so it's optimized for getting help, like a distributed customer support ticketing system.
I don't understand what's so bad with sticking with phpBB.
phpBB is outdated and has had various security holes over the years
Discourse is annoying though and inexplicably only loads posts as you scroll down the page

Sounds like a fun project; what will you be trying to do different from phpBB? I was active on redscare.cafe for a while when that was still around but it never caught on very widely. I guess maybe because the subreddit hadn't gotten boring enough yet more so than because of anything to do with the format
petrarchan admin here, I am working on message board software to try and bring the culture of independent forums back, though its gotten a bit derailed by how much of my time now goes to this site, not that i'm complaining :)

damn I wish redscare cafe was still kicking, I do miss the bbcode forum era. And all the forums ppl have listed in this thread are interesting, but they're all very niche. a broad focused forum, like this board, would be best.

Redscare cafe kinda sucked. Particularly after it died down so quick and then around 5 psychos just used the chat at the bottom of the page.

Why? Linear threading has a way better culture. Back and forths, popular topics stay around until they naturally die out, it actually matters to stay on topic, etc.

I know I'm in the minority here but some of the oldest discussions in that forum are years older than me. That's crazy, and a little bit of a black pill.

I'm a member of the forum that two USENET groups migrated to in the early 2000s. Its focus on scholarly quality speculation in its two primary boards mean that it sustains me. It has 18 "for fun" boards that have 20x the post count of the high quality boards. I think the "fun" boards are to stream the shitwits away from the quality and avoid contamination, like a filter fixated on pleasure over quality: idiots seek pleasure.
