Hi all, The last meta thread (>>6308) hit the bump limit so here's a new one. The most significant recent update on the software side is that there is now automated AI filtering of images. It all happens locally on the server so don't worry, I'm not sending all your picrels to Israel. But if you post an image with a URL in it you should expect that it gets flagged and that your post will vanish. Be patient and I will approve it just like I approve regular threads. Or maybe treat it as an opportunity to find something better to post than web screenshots. Thanks for all the good posts recently, I have enjoyed reading about Veganism, Pawpaws, and your thoughts on AI. Please remember that the site depends on you to spread the word in like-minded places on the web, and also among your real life friends. It can't survive on the trickle of people who see my flair on rsp! cheers, jack
“I’LL BE RIGHT OUT, PLEASE DON’T COME IN.”
What happened to the old meta thread? Threads shouldn’t have bump limits. I want to keep that Pawpaw thread alive until the site goes down or I die like an ancient Roman patriarch tending to his family’s sacred fire.

it's allowed to talk about it. i tolerated a thread here for a long time which literally had the title 'i am antisemitic'. what is not allowed is to say you hate and hope for the death of everyone from X ethnic group. i think that thread started out on a poor premise anyway because it was basically about getting banned from reddit, which just encourages a competition to see who can say the most bannable things. fwiw i did not ban any IPs from that thread but in the future I will be a bit stricter on threads devoted to the topic of ethnic conflicts.

"IP banning" has seated itself in the collective imagination of non-technical internet users but is not a great tool for administration in Anno Domini MMXXVI. VPNs make it trivial to bypass, CGNATs mean collateral damage to innocent users, and banning trouble users only makes them more intent on shitting up your website.

yeah that's impossible without javascript (people have suggested some very ugly css hacks but that's just as bad).
also on 4chan people use it to call every single person in the thread a faggot or a cuck or something and I don't think that's a desirable feature. this is a slow board, if someone is worth replying to you can take the time to memorise and type out five numbers. think of it like writing an address on a postcard. it's lindy and it forestalls dementia.
is it possible to add the 4chan feature where clicking the post # copies it into the text box like >>23456 or is that a javascript thing? it seems pretty simple

It's not impossible without JS but would require a page reload on each click (chained query parameters).
I'm actually impressed that you implemented this site but aren't aware of this.

It's not really a hack as it's the intended purpose of query parameters.
When you begin to chain them (through the same UI method alone, by creating a new dynamically rendered page that embeds existing parameter info in all post number links in the page) it obviously gets clunky, but you can also just not do that. A small "respond" link next to the post number would make it possible for the single post number case and that covers like 90% of people's complaints.
A true hack would look like embedding the whole page in an HTML form and adding checkboxes next to post numbers and maybe adding a button next to the response box saying "respond to selected posts". But even that would not be considered a hack by web 1.0 standards.
Anyway it's achievable but the page reload is obnoxious so embedding a single line of JS to do it would make more sense in all cases anyway. It's not like JS itself is bad as long as you stick to the idea of progressive enhancement. E.g. someone browsing this site through lynx or w3m would not be negatively effected. As it stands it's probably easier to copy paste post numbers in text-based browsers anyway.

There isn't really any dynamic rendering on this site, it's part of the philosophy. I accept there is a tension between making an optimally usable site and weirdo aesthetic technical principles but that's how it is. And I stand by what I said about it encouraging more thoughtful responses.

And AI image filtering is more in line with these principles than a single <script> block? (which you can license so that it meets FSF freedom criteria even)

That too is something that happens when you run an imageboard.
Also I don't actually care about this feature I usually post on desktop. Just wanted to point out the multiple ways it can be implemented without JS and how I'd think about it myself.

Fair enough it's an interesting point. But when I say there's no dynamic rendering what I mean is that the set of pages that can exist is finite and captured by a type and stored in an expiring cache so that if any two users access a page within a given interval it's not rendered again. Bit of a curious way of doing things but there you have it.

Different anon, but what about pic related? where the column for the thread is restricted horizontally and the replybox occupies the top of the visible free column (aligning to the bottom might look nicer, but might be more annoying with the draggable resize on the replybox). Replying would still require typing the desired post number, but wouldn't require the annoyance of memorisation or copying.
Long line lengths are also a detriment to the overall readability of a piece of text (practicaltypography.com/line-length.html), so it'd be an improvement on two fronts. (Three fronts if you consider the detriment to phoneposters.)

It’s an interesting thing to discuss and the image isn’t explicit
>>13996>>13991
He's said that he wants the board to be open-ended and that he wanted moderation to be more hands-off. Actually the comparison used was "like a neighborhood bar".
I really should point out though that /pt/ is not that bad nowadays, I'd even say that it's the best that it's been post-Kiwifarms invasion. Months ago this place was filled with soyjacks and racial slurs, just total dreck. It's main problem is that there are simply too many young and unrefined people here with too little to add, as their opinions and tastes are rigidly uniform and dull.
You’ve been approving some incredibly unaesthetic threads recently; there is one about sadomasochism at the top of the catalog right now. If the goal of the site is to imitate 2000s-era 4chan, I’m out.

what this guy said. I think people sometimes get the idea that this site is supposed to be very curated because of the moderation queue for new threads. In fact the reason for that is primarily just to stop people from being able to post spam/porn and have it appear on the front of the catalog. I approve basically all legitimate threads even when I don't think they're very good. Luckily the thread quality has been better recently.

I already thought about rolling the post numbers around when they reach 99999. Maybe with some sort of symbol to denote the epoch, I don't know. There's a long time left to think about it.
Regarding manually typing post numbers, it's fine because the posts are still in the five digits. Five or six digits of memorization isn't a big deal but some boards on 4chan are in the nine or ten digits, and at that point post numbers stop carrying semantic meaning and what remains is just a Javascript anchor. They might as well be a hash or a row of emoji or whatnot. /pt/ will never be as big as the few remaining big imageboards but if it's still around when the big 7 digit is hit I think it wouldn't hurt to do a post number reset of some sort.
I like the postcard comparison, or as some sort of minigame to keep up short term memory skills. We are just pensioners in our internet culture retirement home with our digital newspapers playing sudoku and crosswords.
