Why don't you just join your country's army? Whatever reason you have for not doing that, it's going to be the exact same in another army.
There are some interesting documentaries on the Foreign Legion on the internet. I won't deny there is a certain romance to the idea of starting your life again but it seems like the reality of it is pretty awful. Most of the legionaries are stupid, violent men from eastern europe or south america. The training is obviously abusive in a way that wouldn't be tolerated in a 'normal' western army and when you do qualify the French government use you as shock troops in West Africa because their general public don't care if you get killed by JNIM or whatever. I don't really see much evidence that the standard of soldiering is higher than other armies. I think in fact it is probably lower because the guys who join are for the most part people who otherwise would be in prison. Apparently they hate anyone who could be classified as an adventure-seeker and they hate anyone who might have something to live for back home. So if you want to get in as a Westerner the best way is to have already served ten years in your own country's army and then turn up at their doorstep saying that what you resented about it was that there weren't enough opportunities to kill people.

OP is someone who desires purpose, and getting a gun put in your hands, someone to aim it at, and bullets headed in your direction gives your immediate and undeniable purpose.

Do you happen to be an RN at a New England CVS? I got a shot today and the guy who administered it kept going on and on about the "FFL" (that is, as everyone knows, the French Foreign Legion). He didn't seem tereibly dim, so I guess it's not likely. I wanted to ask regardless.
