In Canada there is a fascinating subculture on LinkedIn and Instagram consisting of immigrants who manage to secure middling careers in their adoptive countries and manage to attract (usually similarly middling) audiences in their home countries. The Indian women work in food service for a decade and then somehow manage to secure low-paying office jobs with no potential for upward mobility. They usually dress up in an ill-fitting blazer and cross their arms in everything they post. They often have taglines like: “Invest with me!” (none of them have professional credentials which would allow them to deal with securities). Slavic women will take photos of themselves in upscale neighborhoods that they neither live nor work in. Indian guys like doing this, too, you’ll often see them hanging out in groups in random parking lots taking photos of each other and doing it over again in different poses. The Latina women all have their own business (50% of the time it’s some sort of “women in business” accelerator that receives government funding, the other 50% of the time it’s an athletic wear brand or baked goods; I have literally never seen one with any other type of business). The African women wear clothing traditional to their country of origin and are usually involved in scams similar to the Latinas re: women in business or else prosperity gospel televangelism; they are also fond of styling themselves as experts on cryptocurrency. There is an entire industry here built around immigrants getting government financing for their non-profits that then primarily benefit the directors and members of their ethnic group, but that would be enough for an entirely different post.
This post would have done gangbusters on redscarepod
I fear you might have to make that post or at least post more information here
Basically every level of government apportions funds for cultural activities and things like e.g. English lessons for farm workers (who aren’t even eligible to immigrate here under the programs they use to enter the country). These budgets are basically all managed by white liberal women between the ages of 45 and 70. There’s a particular sort of immigrant who makes a point of getting to know everyone in his ethnic group and then directs those people to events, then uses their status within this group to find jobs with non-profits, political campaigns, etc. After a while they start their own non-profit and then teach the next generation how to do the paperwork and get funding. They all network with each other at public events. I’ve seen it with Latinos, Indians, Afghans, Filipinos, and Chinese, but I’m sure it’s basically the same for every group with an diaspora numbering in the tens of thousands. Most of these people are quite similar to the ones in the OP in that they are self-promoters concerned with building their personal brand and being seen. I’ve met a few who were genuinely nice people who just liked helping others, but most struck me as egocentric mercenaries who had no real relationship to my country and no real concern for its future.
