No one will be surprised to see East Asians dominating, and Estonia is a traditional high performer, but the attainment of British (apparently subnationally England is even more impressive) students is remarkable given the prevailing narrative of the UK as a country going round the U Bend. Also interesting to see the countries which usually occupy a smug position at the top of these sorts of tables being distinctly unremarkable. The general story when considered diachronically is that most countries, especially it seems non-Anglo European countries, are on a general backslide that I think can justifiably be attributed to "phones bad". When set against this surge in mediocrity, the stagnant performance of the UK starts to look very good. Non Brits may not know that a little over ten years ago the then Tory education minister Michael Gove made sweeping education reforms that infuriated the teaching unions, the liberal papers, and the average Redditor. I wonder if he's quietly enjoying a celebratory beer (and maybe a few lines) in light of this vindication?
Countries like China openly game these tests so international comparisons seem more or less meaningless to me. And any change over time in a country is only meaningful absent of any methological change.
Even after all that I'm not sure if they correlate with anything other than culture, e.g. Uzbekistan is a superpower in chess. Does that say anything about them other than that they find chess important and have the resources to support a large chess federation.
This is probably nevertheless helpful at like a government level for decision making but I wouldn't read much into it outside of that context

Gove's reforms achieved less than zero. The overall effect was to funnel more government monies to crazy, mad religous schools for people who shouldn't even be in the UK.

Why are they upset/why are people making fun of them, they're above 4/5 Nordic states, a good portion of Europe (if not the majority of it), Israel.. Seems like they are outright overperforming if we're mapping PISA onto GDP (which I hate, doubly, but I know it's the discourse)
I have nothing to add except the Turks are pissed about the results. I didn’t even notice people making fun of them for it. They’re just preemptively angry at people.
