guy fabricating an electric needle the size of a grain of sand : Anonymous : 49 days ago : No.1170

most impressive thing I've seen all week, this guy on YouTube uses watchmakers' tools to fabricate an electric motor that could fit in the eye of a needle. it's hard to even get your head around how small the pieces he's working with here are. tremendously clever and skillful. > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x_NMytSA90

i am officially a retard, *electric motor obviously

I just love watching people manufacture things in a proper machine shop. Being a software guy is so lame compared to being able to make machines out of billet and wire.

Cool

I always just want to dive into those scanned electron microscope photos. A whole world unto itself.

>>1174 they're so cool aren't they. apparently sometimes they need to coat things in gold to image them properly, see picrel.

Here's another great video I watched where a guy fixes up an electron microscope at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kqx9blbYDB0

Reminds me of that story about the Russian jewelers and the tsar.

Somewhat related, new Applied Science video today. > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KJLWwbs_cQ Really clever stuff... using diffraction to parse out the amplitude of different frequencies in the image of the sample and then recombining them to achieve a drastically boosted resolution. Just a shame he didn't show more examples (I think because it seems like he only just about got it to work). Maybe there will be a follow on video.
