What will happen after Reddit is gone? : Anonymous : 76 days ago : № 11659 >>12234
>>11659 (OP) I have always wondered what would happen if one of the major sites did shutdown, completely, along with all mirrors and alts, and how that would effect other sites. Where people would migrate, and how they would adapt to different site cultures, and if they would have realizations that they were, in fact, in repressive hugboxes.

Reddit recently shut down old.reddit.com for users who don’t have an account. The new site barely works on my device and I couldn’t use it to browse the way that I did even if I wanted to. I’ve realized that at least 12 times a day (usually a lot more), I compulsively type old.reddit.com into my address bar just to see what is going on. I still do this out of muscle memory even though the URL has served a login wall for more than a week now. I don’t really care about the platform, but I’m worried about the impact it will have on my ability to find things via search. Starting in about 2018, when I would conduct a search on Google, I noticed that if I didn’t append site:reddit.com to the search, I would end up getting low-quality content from small businesses and other content mills that had no guarantee of being helpful. By the summer of 2025 I was also frequently appending before:2023 to reduce the amount of AI responses in comments. This kept Google reasonably usable for a time, but I don’t think it will last. Reddit has been open about wanting to pivot away from drive-by traffic (which can’t be as easily profiled) and towards Facebook’s walled garden model. Both sites have absolutely destroyed Google Images as the default assumption is that everyone already has an account and can view the content. I also archive a lot of content and have found Reddit, Instagram, and YouTube have all been clamping down on programs like yt-dlp in an effort to prevent content from being exfiltrated from their platforms. I’m aware of various alternative platforms but the issue there is that these platforms don’t have the historical archive of content (which stretches back 20+ years on Reddit), nor the userbase necessary to create one. I’ve found most are also extremely unlikely to ever take off, with poor design decisions that make them undesirable even for people who are already sold on the need for an alternative. The problem reminds me of how the logic of global supply chains was challenged in 2020; I had never had the experience of going to a store and expecting them to be out of something until then. Similarly, I’ve always lived in a world where my default assumption is that the information is out there and that you can access it for free; but what will the world look like when that is no longer the case?

I'm addicted to reddit. like many rs users I've deleted instagram and reddit is the only social media i frequent. like many rs users, my life will be better when I'm without reddit. it is also possible that I will go insane from the lack of feeling of community, however bastardised, that reddit provides. 50/50 chance. curious to see how it pans out

>>11665 Sites like this one can’t scale. When I submitted this thread it didn’t appear right away, so someone is manually approving posts; that’s fine for readers, but if you want to submit a thread it will eventually mean anything you want to post is stuck in a large queue. Maybe people who are more cognizant of what they are reading will move to sites like this, and everyone else will end up in Facebook’s walled gardens.

I'm really intrigued by how the internet is going to shake out in light of reddit in particularly alienating so many people. I genuinely think we will se a return to fringe sites like this and personal websites. I think there'll be a wave of it being 'cool' to have your own website or be part of some weird forum.

100% relate to many of these sentiments. I obviously abhor how much I have used compulsively and feel a vicarious sense of relation from the last few holdout interesting sites. I mourn having to consider ceding fully the internet, since a free and consumer friendly internet at least had the pretense of being able to mitigate some of the downsides to increasing technological dependence. I pray this site can hold out against the pulsing waves of nonsense.

I’m surprised reddit still allows archive.org to save posts since they announced they would block access last year. It only allows 10000 captures of the same site per day, but you can use old.reddit instead of the default www. Once old reddit dies for good I will be free from that site. I wasted so much time on there for years, but now I only browse the rs subs since it’s the only place on there that feels like I’m talking to real people and not scrolling through the same 50 joke comments, but the rs subs have those too. If you make an archive.org account and you link a google account to it, you can make a google sheet with up to 5000 links to archive. Then you can submit the sheets link to archive.org and it will archive all those links plus any outlinks for you. Look up “save page now google sheets” For more archive related stuff check out archiveteam they have a lot of tools and resources for archiving things on the internet

As bad as reddit has become I still prefer it to discord. I don’t know how people can navigate it especially when it becomes a substitute for a forum for something like a video game community. It is so tedious to scroll through tons of garbage posts to find what I’m looking for when searching, and that’s assuming the server join link still works, or some angry mod nuked the whole server over something stupid. So much information is hidden from search engines on these servers and they get abandoned too.
Anonymous : 73 days ago : № 11728
Discord is devastatingly bad, so harmful to technology that I think it might just be an intentional blow to information preservation and FOSS.

Well, as of about three days ago, I can no longer even view Reddit posts without logging in on mobile. If they start locking down the old archives on desktop I won’t know what to do; I refuse to create an account on principle but it’s a huge knowledge base to lose access to. I’ve noticed in the last year Google Images has gone over to being almost all social media results with cropped low quality images behind a login wall; I thought this was just Google trying to promote recent content, but now I think there just might not be many sites allowing Google to index their images anymore. Cynically I think the tech companies are running ineffective scrapers on purpose to kill off independent sites by flooding them with traffic.

This board is barely a year old, if you don’t like it maybe you should just leave.

>>13709 You sure got him. Good one. I'm actually shocked how quickly these sites still change. I've been gone from the RS subs for a couple months, and they've changed massively. Not only are frontpagers universal, but the atmosphere is totally different and there's apologetics regarding normie behaviour in every thread. I'm beginning to think that I alone maintain the culture of every online space I grace with my presence. It's even possible that reality itself springs forth directly from me, and whatever I neglect withers away like a closet succulent.
Anonymous board solipsism is a greater danger to these places I think. Everything changes, embrace impermanence.

and also... github.com/tom-james-watson/old-reddit-redirect/issues/231 >Reddit have made a change that makes old reddit not work while logged out. There's nothing we can do about this, unfortunately.

github.com/mkornreich/old_reddit Haven't tried this but looks interesting. >A browser extension — Firefox and Chrome / Chromium (Edge, Brave, Opera) — that rebuilds Reddit's frontend into old Reddit. It fetches each page from Reddit's JSON API and renders old Reddit's real archived HTML + CSS, then layers on RES-style power features. Looks slop-coded to me, but hey, if it works?

I struggle every day not to comment on my usual haunts on reddit and just lurk. My previous account got banned for seemingly nothing, but it seems to have been triggered by posting a lot and then rapidly deleting comments. This is something I do a lot out of habit but apparently is not kosher anymore. I'm afraid to comment and start shitposting in case I lose my account because it seems like this may be my very last window into being able to use old reddit properly (without entering the cat-and-mouse Nitter game, though I appreciate devs who push for a workaround). I had to block the comment box with the Ublock element remover. I feel like I've been silenced. It is honestly a deep sadness. I used to be such a prolific shitposter, now I am a pathetic quiet lump

Also, I suspect they will start banning lurking empty profiles too.

Also also, I miss stalking Admin-sama's profile, it's been privated. My last parasocial friendship, gone with the wind ~

>>13905 Seems to be some crap about age restrictions. On my previous banned account they "requested" ID verification to see profiles tagged with NSFW and yours was. I got around it by browsing from a non-EU address. How draconian.

>>13907 Sounds like an incredibly lame place. I have fond memories of the original r/cumtown, pre-privating, even though I never listened to more than a few minutes of that podcast and generally dislike the show's lowbrow fanbase; and of r/drama, two places that made me laugh the most on reddit. I know it's irrelevant but I'm turning this into an impromptu memorial thread for the site that has sucked up so much of our collective time.
