Is it wrong to use basic, dirt-level language to describe beautiful things? Like those top-rated letterboxd comments that describe some masterpiece with a one-liner quip. Or those substack posts that talk about really complicated politics one sentence and interject 4chan lingo in the next. Or Ancient Greek professors saying that the Iliad is all about some dude who got his girl stolen and got mad about it. These kinds of statements are rarely inaccurate, usually funny, and sometimes even help a much wider audience connect with something that they never have connected with before. All that sounds great, but is there an unseen risk that accompanies these free advantages? Are we losing something by not giving any thought to the language we are using?
Blending low/middle/high brow language is an art. Can be done well or poorly. For example, many people interject “fucking”, “shitty”, etc into their language almost impulsively. Makes them sound trashy. Some people have incredibly pornbrained language, casually dropping “coomer”, “mommy”, other gross unpleasant slang. But when the language is genuinely descriptive, politically provocative, or otherwise interesting, it’s a solid addition
I think using prosaic, direct language for high-minded concepts should be the norm. Simple language begets clarity. However, some of the examples you give sound more like irreverence-- poking fun at something you really care about like film or literature while commenting on it is a way to be 'above it all' that usually reads to me as disingenuous or going for a cheap laugh. I think it's a case by case basis though; a good speaker can really make any approach work.
I agree with the others here that simple language is often the best, but the irreverence you are describing is something different. Most people lead trivial lives, so the thought that something is actually important and weighty is alien to them. Quipping about it is safer and less challenging -- they are tilting at windmills by deflating air out of a stuffy academic establishment that doesn't truly exist any more.
Using vernacular to describe anything is wrong and ugly (and therefore evil), you must retvrn to Latin only.
